Birth time calculator

How many different charts an uncertain birth window still allows.

Start here if you do not know your birth time. It shows what the uncertainty costs you, which lagnas your window spans, and when the ascendant changes inside it.

Rising sign calculator

Your lagna, its degree and your birth nakshatra.

Use it when you know your time to the minute. The lagna changes sign roughly every two hours and moves a degree every four minutes, so a rounded time often returns the wrong one.

Vimshottari dasha calculator

Every mahadasha, antardasha and pratyantardasha from birth, with the periods running today marked.

Use it for anything about timing. Dasha dates move by months when the birth time moves by minutes, so this is the page that rewards an exact time most.

Sade Sati calculator

Every Saturn leg across the sign before your moon sign, your moon sign and the sign after, with dates.

Reads from your moon sign, which moves slowly, so an approximate birth time is usually enough. Only a birth close to a moon sign change needs the time settled first.

Mangal dosha calculator

Where Mars falls counted from the lagna, the Moon and Venus, reported as three separate results with no verdict.

The reading from the lagna moves with your birth time, so rectify first if the time is a guess. The Moon and Venus readings hold either way.

Six of the eight kootas read a nakshatra or a moon sign, so a birth near either boundary leaves part of the score undecided until the time is settled.

The one tool here that needs no birth details at all. The day's parts come from your local sunrise and the weekday, so they are the same for everyone in the same city and differ between cities on the same date.

Which of these need an exact birth time?

It matters more than it sounds, because some of the calculators on this page change their answer when the birth time moves by minutes and the rest do not.

The rising sign and Vimshottari dasha calculators need a time you trust, and so does the lagna half of mangal dosha. Your lagna changes sign about every two hours, and dasha dates shift by months for a few minutes of error, so a rounded time does not produce a slightly wrong answer there. It produces a different one.

Sade Sati and kundli matching read your moon sign and your nakshatra, which move slowly enough that an approximate time usually reaches the same result. The exception is a birth close to a boundary, where the sign or the star is genuinely undecided until the time is.
